Shann - Angel's Landing

Updated SHANN CALL - Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, June 2006

It is impossible to portray the grandeur and beauty of this panorama in such a small image! Shann took it on his last visit to Zion National Park with his wife Debora in the summer of 2006. The PrintStar store on Main Street in Afton, Wyoming has on display a very large print of this view, and it is well worth a visit just to see. One of Shann's most spectacular pictures, indeed.

Note: due to an error in cataloging, we had previously identified this photo as being taken in Yellowstone. We recently received a note from Shann's daughter Sonnet, which read in part:

"I was just enjoying viewing the wonderful pictures of my dad's photography on your web site for the first time.  I really enjoyed it.  However, I did notice one minor error.  Angel's Landing can't be found anywhere in Yellowstone National Park. The picture was taken in Zion National Park down by St. George, Utah, where my parents took an anniversary trip before my Dad's first surgery, him not knowing whether he would have the use of his legs after risky surgery. So he decided to climb wet cliff rock by hanging onto a chain, in the dark before early sunrise, to get this hard-earned photograph, deciding to live life to the fullest even if it meant scaring my Mom to death with his very risky climb.  Just thought you might enjoy the story.  Sincerely, Sonnet at BYU-Idaho."

Sonnet later added: "You're welcome to use anything I wrote to add to the picture, I would be happy with anything you would like to include. Knowing my Dad, a sense of humor added to it would only add to the accuracy of the event."

We appreciate her emphasizing Shann's great good humor! By the way, check out this website on Angel's Landing by the National Park Service. You can see the torturous climb that Shann made in the dark to get the shot. A quote from that webpage: "One would think that this narrow ridge with deep chasms on each of its flanks would allure only the most intrepid of hikers." 'Nuff said.
