Shann often had great fun stalking mountain goats in the Snake River canyon above Alpine, Wyoming. This picture of a goat in the sunlight is a typical product of that challenge. While his wife Debora kept a nervous eye on him with a spotting telescope from the road far below, Shann would meet these goats on their own ground and take their portraits. He seldom used a telephoto lens in this work, so it is easy to see how close he got to them - individual hairs on their fur are visible! Shann climbed the near-vertical slopes to take this photo about a year before he passed away, and shortly after he had major surgery - true grit indeed.
